Avoid Explosion Potential
Being able to shut off gas after a quake is crucial. A natural gas leak in your home is always reason for concern. Earthquakes can jar loose or rupture pipes located underground and release gas. It is essential in earthquake preparedness that you and all members of your family become familiar with how to shut off gas at the main shutoff valve. This valve will be located close to the gas. It will have an arm that runs parallel with the gas line. The arm has to be turned 90 degrees or a quarter turn in order to shut it off. Hang a wrench nearby the meter, so that you will not have to search for the proper tool in an emergency.
